“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
— MR ROGERS

The world can seem like a frightening place. Global strife, impoverished communities, and systemic imbalances provide more than enough fodder for our anxious minds to cling to. Combine that with natural disasters that devastate the lives of millions, and it can seem impossible to fix. Sprinkle in how social media highlights the negative and downplays the positive and you might not even think there are enough people trying to make a difference.
Despite what your social media feed tells you, there are millions of people helping others. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, approximately 1.56 million nonprofits were registered with the IRS in 2015. Public charities accounted for over three-quarters of the nonprofit sector’s revenue and expenses, and 25% of US adults volunteered and contributed nearly 8.8 billion hours to these causes. That averages out to each of those volunteers working two full work-weeks of their year plus overtime (100+ hours).
On the world stage, this number grows even larger. There are organizations doing their best to help communities in dire circumstances or just making sure that individuals can get the education, healthcare, and basic amenities they deserve.

On the world stage, this number grows even larger. There are organizations doing their best to help communities in dire circumstances or just making sure that individuals can get the education, healthcare, and basic amenities they deserve.
But even helpers need helping. And that is what we keep seeing. Time and again, a group of people seeking to make a difference brought their ambition, but lacked the resources to make that difference they wanted to before other needs caught up with them. GeNEUROsity was founded to follow in the steps of Dr. T.V. Seshan—helping people and organizations identify and pursue the opportunities around them. We’re empowering the helpers.
We believe that small efforts can make a great impact, and we recognize that the opportunities for support are not equal in all areas. Despite every community having people wanting to make a difference, not every community can provide those people the jumping-off platform they need to be the best version of themselves. Not every community can even provide everything needed to help their members survive, let alone thrive. Our mission is to make sure people have the basics covered and then to provide lift to driven individuals and organizations who are looking to make an impact.

For many, the road of life is cast with doubt, despair, and constant bias. But no one is alone. It takes every single grain of sand to make the seashore, and GeNEUROsity seeks to unlock the potential in people and groups who aspire to transform the world. The world is not lacking in helpers who want to do good—but many of the helpers are in need of the basics of life and security before they can let their ambitions flourish and reach out to lift those around them.
We have been helping the helpers for a few years now and have seen real change and growth through our partnerships with organizations like the Ouallo Kouya foundation, the Fuller Center for Housing, Project Sunshine, and the Ronald McDonald House. From educational support in the form of extracurricular structure, to volunteers helping with affordable housing, to grants to impact-focused start-ups—there are ways to help those who need it.
