Day of Service in Honor of Dr. T.V. Seshan

Posted: May 7, 2021

GeNEUROsity was founded on the legacy of Dr. T.V. Seshan. His spirit of giving and generosity are the guiding star for our foundation, and as April 23 marked the fifth anniversary of his passing, we wanted to do something special this year to honor him.

To Dr. Seshan, giving was second nature. He grew up in a family with a culture of giving where he learned to always support and improve the lives of those less fortunate than he by offering food, clothing, shelter, education, or anything else needed to empower them to grow with dignity and move toward greater independence. He shared that culture of giving with all who he came in contact with, and his wife, Dr. Surya Seshan, said, “The premise of helping and being of service to others, passed on for generations in our families, has given a sense of purpose and fulfillment to our lives.”

We carry that culture of giving forward in our work, and it’s why a day of service felt like the perfect way to honor Dr. Seshan’s memory.

On April 18, we teamed up again with our longstanding partner, the Fuller Center for Housing, in Westchester County, NY. Our goal was to help with the ongoing work of restoring community property in Moquette Row in Yonkers, NY that we began in January (read about our 2021 Community Day here).

Together, we helped build concrete walls to shore up the foundations of two homes and helped repair a home for a future family. In the community, we built planters and benches to bring a little color and comfort to the neighborhood and local schools.

Afterward, we received this note from Jim Killoran, President of the Greater New York City chapter of the Fuller Center for Housing:

I can’t express enough thanks to The Seshan Family Foundation and its team of builders from Neuro Alert and the extended Seshan family and friends.

From helping during our Martin Luther King (MLK) Build-a-thon to honoring Dr. T.V. Seshan and his life, GeNEUROsity has inspired our Fuller Center team to know that the legacy of greats like Dr. Seshan and Millard Fuller live on! Their legacy of helping others live decently, simply, with quality medical care, and a simple decent home continues because of folks like GeNEUROsity, Neuro Alert, the Fuller Center team, and our many other volunteer partners. …

Bringing out their team members (twice!) from Rochester to Elmsford to Yonkers safely, socially distanced, during this most challenging year… building, revitalizing the neighborhood, pouring concrete, giving back—this has been invaluable to our existence. Our hope is that more will come out inspired like the Seshan Family Foundation and Neuro Alert and that our partnership will continue in the legacy of building together with Dr. T.V. Seshan and Millard smiling upon us.

We are excited for the success of our day of service, and feel it was the perfect way to honor Dr. Seshan’s life. Dr. Seshan’s daughter, Nandini Seshan, had this to say:

“Our family’s commitment to service events is a way of bringing our father’s vision to life by transforming the lives of different communities and inspiring others to be a better version of themselves. It has been humbling to work with the Fuller Center for Housing for the past few years to be able to meaningfully impact those less fortunate.”

We would like to personally thank everyone involved in this event—from the Fuller Center and their commitment to help our New York communities, to Neuro Alert and its Executive Team (and their families), to all of the Seshans’ friends and family who also joined us. (With a particularly big shout out to Tiffany Tecce who organized the whole thing soup-to-nuts with the Fuller Center team!) We all pitched in and worked together to make the day so successful and memorable.

Dr. Seshan would have been overwhelmingly honored and humbled by our commitment to service during this day of remembering his life.
